The singer who has a calm way of talking, a humble attitude, and a unique and attractive voice. I met Big Bang’s Taeyang (23,·real name Dong Young Bae), who is favorable to anyone, even if they’ve seen him just once. Taeyang whose shy smiling eyes are impressive, looked aflutter before the release of his full album. He showed his own attractiveness on the last solo activity as well, but that was just a warm-up for the upcoming album.

Taeyang says he was a bit depressed last year but he is likely to show a lot of new things he has in store of this year. I heard a story once, that there was a boy who bared his loneliness by listening to the radio during his childhood, he grew up as a singer who delighted numerous people, despite the worries he had along the way, he shared his shining dream. Taeyang’s ‘Star diary’ is going on from part 1 to part 10. (editor’s annotation)

“I was a crybaby in my childhood. I used to cry because I had to go to kindergarten in the mornings. I cried at the thought that ‘what if my mom isn’t home when I come back from kindergarten?’. I was a real crybaby who cried three or four times in a day…”

Soft-hearted ‘crybaby’ Taeyang liked music especially. His brother, who is 5 years older than him, also liked music, so he was able to experience different genre’s of music at an early age.

“I listened to a lot in addition to pop or the classics. I liked biographies of musicians like Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven, so much that I remember them [the biographies] even now. It’s vague, but I also learned to play the piano with a lot of focus because I liked music.”

Having more and more time alone, he began to enjoy music earnestly. IMF (International Monetary Funds) approached his family when he was in the fourth grade. His father’s company, which was doing decently, became bankrupt and he had to move to a relative’s house.

Taeyang had to live separated from his parents at a very early age and relied only in the place he lived. He was befriended by the radio and his music. Even though he couldn’t buy every record he wanted to listen to with the small amount of pocket money he had, the radio world always welcomed him warmly.

“I listened to radio a lot while keeping to myself, when I was separated from my parents. It was a lonely and difficult time but it was bearable because I could listen to the radio”

Taeyang was left alone at that time, hoping to help his parents. Seeing his home vanishing, he learned what it was like to be lonely, earlier than others his age. But those times when he was left alone have now become his stepping stones to grow up as a singer.

Ich habe Big Bang’s Taeyang (23, Bürgerlicher Name Dong Young Bae) getroffen, der gut zu jedem ist, auch wenn er jemanden erst einmal getroffen hat. Ich habe einmal die Geschichte von einem Jungen gehört, der in seiner Kindheit seine Einsamkeit überwunden hat in dem er Radio gehört hat. Er wurde ein Sänger, der unzählbare Leute erfreute, trotz der Sorgen die ihn auf seinem Weg begleitet haben, teilt er seinen strahlenden Traum. Taeyang’s ‚Star diary‘ wird von Part 1 bis Part 10 andauern.

“Ich war als Kind eine Heulsuse[Anm.: ich mag das Wort nicht. Aber es ist leider die Übersetzung dafür><]. Ich habe geweint, weil ich morgens in den Kindergarten musste. Ich habe bei dem Gedanken geweint ‚Was wenn meine Mutter nicht zuhause ist wenn ich vom Kindergarten nachhause komme?‘. Ich war eine wirkliche Heulsuse, die drei bis vier mal am Tag geweint hat…“

Die warmherzige ‘Heulsuse’ Taeyang mochte besonders Musik. Sein Bruder, der fünf Jahre älter ist als er, mochte ebenfalls Musik und so hatte er die Möglichkeit verschiedene Genre der Musik schon in frühen Jahren zu erfahren.
“Ich habe mir viel angehort, gemischt mit Pop oder den Klassikern. Ich mochte auch Biografien von Musikern wie Mozart, Schubert und Bethoven, so sehr, dass ich mich heute noch an sie erinnere. Ich habe auch mit viel Begeisterung Piano spielen gelernt, weil ich Musik mochte.“

Je mehr Zeit er alleine verbrachte, desto ernsthafter began er Gefallen an der Musik zu finden. IMF(International Monetary Funds) nahm Kontakt zu seiner Familie auf al ser in der vierten Klasse war. Die Firma seines Vater , welche gut lief, ging Bankrott und er musste zu Verwandten ziehen. (das macht keinen Sinn, steht so aber da><)

Taeyang lebte getrennt von seinen Eltern in jungen Jahren und musste sich auf den Ort verlassen, an dem er lebte. Er war mit dem Radio und der Musik befreundet. Auch wenn er sich mit seinem geringen Taschengeld nicht alle CD’s kaufen konnte die er wollte, war das Radio immer da um ihn Willkommen zu heißen.

“Ich habe oft Radio gehört, während ich alleine und von meinen Eltern getrennt war. Es war eine einsame und schwere Zeit, aber es war erträglich weil ich Radio hören konnte.“

Taeyang wurde zu der Zeit alleine gelassen, in der Hoffnung seinen Eltern zu helfen. Während er sein zuhause verschwinden sah, lernte er wie es war einsam zu sein, früher als andere in seinem Alter. Aber diese Zeiten in denen er alleine gelassen war sind jetzt seine Meilensteine auf seinem weg Sänger zu werden.

Aber hast recht, is ziemlich viel o.o wenn ich so zum vergleich meinen Neffen sehe, der is nun 6 und seit drei Jahren hab ich ihn glaub ich nur 4 mal weinen gesehen o.o
Ich finds erstaunlich dass sie in sowas hier so viel preisgeben quasi. Hat aber auch was tolles an sich. Ich mag es zu sehen was so hinter den Personen steckt. Zumal man von Taeyang ja doch nicht sooooooo viel mitbekommt, da er im vergleich zu Daesung oder Gdragon doch recht schweigsam ist und wenn dann meist über Geschichten der anderen oder eben die ncoh nicht allzu lange her sind erzählt o.o

Taeyang (23,·real name Dong Young Bae) has liked music ever since he was little. But, being raised at a relative’s home, he was sent to an acting academy. "It was probably because acting academies were booming in those days. My cousins were also going to acting academies, so I went together with them. But that wasn’t what I wanted"

Although he never cared for the acting academy, it was because of this he got the opportunity to become a singer. It was during his time at the acting academy, he was able to appear in Jinusean’s music video as ‘little Sean’.

"The acting academy allowed me to participate in auditions. I was often an extra at that time. However, accidentally, YG was looking for someone to take in Jinusean’s music video, I had the audition and got picked as ‘little Sean’".

He met Yang Hyun Suk, the representative of YG entertainment, while working as ‘little Sean’. For little 12-year-old Taeyang’s eyes, Jinusean and representative YG couldn’t look greater.
"[Their]Music and clothing looked very nice. I thought ‘I must get into this company, even if I’m just here to be in a music video’".

Being ‘little Sean’, he did music programs with Jinusean. Finally, on the day of the last broadcasting, little Taeyang poured his heart out and said he wanted to join YG and rep. Yang said that he can do so.
“President Yang Hyun Suk said he would call me to come later. It may have just been some words to make me feel good because I was a cute looking boy, and thats why I misunderstood."

He waited for months, but the phone call didn’t come. Eventually, Taeyang gallantly walked into YG’s office on his birthday and he went straight to the president’s office.

Taeyang gave himself the present of ‘entering into YG’. And so, his sad and happy trainee life began.

12-year-old Taeyang (23·real name Dong Young Bae) became a trainee in YG entertainment. Looking back, those trainee days were such a happy time for him. “I think anybody, anything will be sad during their trainee days because we couldn’t do anything then.”

He had a dream about being a singer because he liked music so much. That’s why he could swallow his anxiety. “We train with constant anxiety all the time. Because we train endlessly without any promises or time period of when we’re going to debut”

But there isn’t a time that is more funny and happier than those times. He was full of excitment, day by day, in the hopes that he would do everything.

“Recently, I talked to Jiyong (G-dragon) on how happy our trainee days used to be. We didn’t have much time, at that time. Sometimes, our president would give us ten’s of thousands of wons, which seemed like big money to us. We would be concerned with ‘how can we have fun’ with them instead of using frugally – whatever we did was interesting”

When he got pocket money, he usually went shopping to Dongdaemun with G-dragon. They searched for inexpensive and nice clothes like usual teenagers. “Even when we got only a hundred thounsand won, we could dress up from head to toe. (laugh) We stood on stage with our seniors after dressing up."

G-dragon and Taeyang were busier than anyone in those days. Wearing many different hats in their seniors’ performances, they built up their experience. “Jiyong and I were the busiest. When our seniors like Big Mama, Lexy and Wheesung were doing activities, we were busier than them.”

Seven especially took care of G-dragon and Taeyang in the trainee days.
“Seven-hyung goes wakeboarding every summer, since then he has brought us along and we’ve hung out together. I remember the summer unusually bright, when we wakeboard and hang out. It couldn’t be a happier time for me that those times.”

[Star Diary, Part 4] “G-Dragon and I Have Only Fought Once.”

Taeyang(23, real name Dong YongBae) and G-Dragon(23, real name Kwon JiYong) have been close friends ever since they met 10 years ago as trainees. Asiae was curious after learning about their history as friends and wondered, is there any rivalry between them? Have they ever fought with each other?

“We fought once.” Taeyang admitted. “It was while playing basketball…”

Taeyang and G-Dragon played basketball against dancer trainees, who they kept losing to. With his natural competitive nature, Taeyang thought “I’m going to win this” but G-Dragon’s thoughts were “This [game] isn’t even fair” and wanted to quit.

“We kept on losing and Jiyong said ‘Let’s just stop’ but I told him ‘Let’s play until we win’. We eventually started to argue about whether we should play or not and then we started fighting.(laughs)”

The two of them are almost polar opposites in their personality and tastes. For example, while G-Dragon has changed his hairstyle over 200 times since their debut, TaeYang has only changed it twice.

“Jiyong has no fears when it comes to trying new things. I’m the type of person who has to think things through carefully. I think that’s part of the reason why we get along so well. I hold him back and Jiyong shows me things that I wouldn’t usually try.”

Even when it comes to picking out their food from a menu, Taeyang wants to eat “whatever is good” but G-Dragon has a more detailed menu inside his mind where he thinks “for this occasion you eat this and for that occasion, you eat that”. (I think they got their names mixed up here)

“I’m indecisive, so I can’t pick things so easily. But Jiyong isn’t like that. Even so, we still respect each other [in our decisions]. When I see Jiyong, there’s things that I naturally accept about him and vice versa. I really think that I have no other [close] friends besides Jiyong nowadays.”

Ever since their trainee days these two have become close friends and have been there to comfort and cheer each other on through the rough times. Because of their friendship, they are never lonely while working in the entertainment business. “While we’re working, there’s definitely times when we clash. But like it or not, I think Jiyong and I have done well so far.”

Taeyang (23,·real name Dong Young Bae) finally debuted in Big Bang, after his tough trainee days. Doing activities in front of the public, he was able to give pleasure, but he has also had numerous secret conflicts.

“To tell you the truth, I had some worries after my debut. Actually I’ve liked “black music” since my childhood and thought I could become like my favorite artists. I’ve always dreamed of that but after I debuted in an idol group, I had to be “popular” and do activities with songs which I’ve never considered singing. So I was confused for a while.”

He learned, for the first time, that the world couldn’t be as he had hoped. He was sorry to miss the many musical activities he strived for because of his busy schedules.

“I didn’t even have time to shed tears. The expectations of too many people became a burden for me from the beginning of my debut. We continually put out albums and still now, have work to do. Receiving the grand prize is not the end because we always have to think of the next.”



Because they are a popular idol group, there were a lot of activities like filming commercials besides music. These outside parts became stressful to Taeyang. But the missing parts could be fulfilled through his own effort and solo activity.

“There are many things I gained through my solo activity. When I did activities as Big Bang, the members used to fill my lacking areas. In the solo activity there was a feeling of backpacking. I had to do everything by myself but that was very amusing.”

He got to like music more. He tries to convey and give his 100% percent during those moments. He felt, that the more he – through music – gives other people pleasure, the more happier he would be. Seeing that audiences were delighted, Taeyang was the happiest in those moments while standing in front of his audience.

2009 was an exceptionally tough one for Taeyang (23·real name Dong Young Bae). Managing both Big Bang’s activities in Japan and preparing for his solo album, he got more and more tired both mentally and physically.
“I feel last year was just a blank in my life. It was a nervous time, maybe because it was the third year in my singing career.”

For him, it has often been obligatory to stand on stages. Singing in an uncharged state, he has been exhausted and it has been hard on his mind.
He was the happiest, singing and dancing in front of audiences and he believe that was what brought him the most happiness, but he also felt pathetic towards himself that he couldn’t do his best.
“I thought I didn’t sing sincerely, and felt like ‘What did I do on the stage?’.”



This was during the time he had to prepare for his solo album under pressed schedules. His music didn’t come from the mind to begin with. His mind felt unstable, like he was pressed for something, and there was no particular goal for an outcome.
“After schedules were finished, I had to prepare my solo activities. I was pressed for time and pressed for work, so I couldn’t have the peace of mind I wanted”

At that time, he sang to tunes and beats but there was no emotion. The doors of his heart were shut as well. It was hard for him to meet people and smile.
“I didn’t even want to see people so I just stayed home. Besides, I couldn’t sleep well…”

But the moment he saw the first snow of 2010, he changed his mind.
“It’s too hard to live like this.”

With a shy personality, Taeyang (23, Dong Young Bae) has truthfully never really dated anyone.

“I really want to meet a girlfriend this year. I feel like if I get older, I won’t be able to date.”

Taeyang has a couple he envies a lot, Sean and Jung Hye Young. He says when he sees Sean living happily he thinks, “I should live that way too.”

“I think it was 3 months ago. I went to Sean hyung’s house because he said he would make dinner for me. I was eating, and when i saw HyeYoung nuna with HaEum, HaRang, and HaYul, I felt so many things.”

What he saw was the result of a happy home. It was a home that makes you happy even by seeing it.

However, Taeyang is a man weak to dates. He loses his timing by debating, saying, “What if it doesnt work out?” and “Won’t it be a burden?” even if he likes someone.

“I had my first love when I was in school. But I thought I wouldn’t be a help to that person so we didn’t start well. If I think about it now, we could have done well…”

He hesitated again and again because he thought he would give harm to his first love, who was busy studying hard.

“She was studying to go to a high school specializing in foreign languages. She studied a lot, and I saw that she was trapped in making the decision of meeting me or not in that important time.”

Seeing her work hard, he stepped back to help her. After that, Taeyang also never dated after that due to hard practice and busy activities.

He has a personality where when he focuses on one thing, he falls into it, but he is also very cautious and serious, which turned out to be an obstacle in terms of dating.

“I like someone who cares for others.”

Taeyang’s ideal type is a woman with a sincere and pure image. Rather than someone with outstanding looks, he’d rather have someone who cares for others and is warm. And he doesn’t leave out the fact that he wants to meet someone he really likes.

Instead of an instant kind of love, he wants a serious relationship. Sometimes he thinks that the way he can’t comfortably meet lots of people as too bad, but he says that he wants a meeting that he can see through to the end.

“It’s possible to meet someone and get along and continue to have a good relationship, but it doesn’t work for me. Rather than having someone I can meet when I have some spare time, I want someone I can be thankful for because they’re there. If I were to meet someone I like tomorrow I want that person to be my last love.”

With his serious personality, Taeyang has a lot of worries when it comes to love. But because he hasn’t had the experience of deep relationships there are times when he feels like something’s lacking as he’s trying to express himself in song. Since he doesn’t have any experience with love nor does he have any memories of devastating scars, there are times when he can only express himself from his imagination.



“Rather than an encounter where we fight and hurt each other and break up, I want to meet someone I really like and love her. But when I’m singing about scars that love can leave there are a lot of times when I imagine, ‘it could be like this.’ Even during ‘Only Look at Me’ I had to sing sorrowfully without having such experience. I just sang with a ‘I really love you’ feeling.”

He is of the worrisome and opportunity-filled age of 22. With his calmness and seriousness, he gives thought to every step forward that he takes. His genuine and honest words, without any know-it-all conceit or senselessness, feels rather more trustworthy.

With earnest, he could use his own “colors”, those of which he couldn’t show this whole time.
“It’s hard to say what style songs they are. You will see as you listen to it, rather than my words.
It may sound new. It was filled up with songs that can contain my style well rather than songs which are “too trendy”. It’s basically R&B.”

At the height of working for his album, he became sensitive enough that his members couldn’t easily come near him . But that time has passed. “It’s an official full album that I released with my name. That’s why I was very stressful and sensitive. I kept trying to think of the reason of why I liked music. It’s right that I do music because I’m happy, I sing and I’m happy when I do music, so I thought it (music) shouldn’t be painful either”

At the time, he made efforts to hold his own musical energy by breaking up his busy time and
gathering up his scattered mind. He grew up some more with the hard times. “Now I feel much more free. Actually on my birthday I even wanted to say to my fans don’t give me any presents’. Because I was sorry to give them nothing… But I think I’ll be able to give a present now, too. Excited.”

I still want to become like that. But now I’m starting to think that I just want to give it my all. If I do that, then I can become the best to someone.”

He shared that he wishes that the stages that he puts together would be a good influence to people. The idea of putting on a performance with good meaning comes to him often.
“I want to put on a performance that has a good message. Of course it’s something I can do only after I become better and gain more influence… but whether it be for children who are going through a hard time, I want to put on a show with that kind of meaning.”

Like his name, Taeyang is working towards becoming a singer who can shine a light to the world. Rather than becoming a bright shining star, Taeyang is taking one step at a time towards becoming an artist that is like brilliant and warm sunshine that helps grow and enriches all things.
“This year I want to put aside obsession and greed, and relentlessly work. Instead of working with just one song from my solo album, I think I’ll be relentlessly working on showcasing a lot of songs.”

Taeyang brings a smile to the faces of all who are watching him, with the way he leads his life with endless worrying and effort, his passion towards music, and the way he does not forget his heart towards others.
